MEP blasts Euro red tape
THE amount of EU red tape has been criticised by a local Euro MP.
East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer says the sheer volume of new EU rules is placing an added burden on businesses and charities.
Mr Helmer said 100,000 extra pages had been added to the Acquis Communautaire - the EU's rulebook - since Labour came to power.
He added: "The Labour government and Labour MEPs have allowed far too much extra regulation to be imposed on our charities, workers and businesses.
"To its credit, the European Commission has begun a programme of scrapping or simplifying laws that are either obsolete or unnecessarily complex. The pace needs to be moved up several gears."
New face at conservation group
DERBYSHIRE Wildlife Trust has appointed a new membership services manager.
Bob Acrey previously managed the membership section of the Youth Hostels' Association (England & Wales).
Prior to that he oversaw the marketing activity for the original Harry Ramsden’s restaurant in Yorkshire and promoted a subtitled video service for the hard-of-hearing at a charity based in Stockport.
Bob, who lives in Matlock, says: “Members are the life-blood of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. I am keen to work in partnership with others to grow our membership to enable us to improve conditions for wildlife in Derbyshire.”
Derbyshire Wildlife Trust currently has 14,000 members, including a thriving junior section, Wildlife Watch. Trust members support the organisation's work on nature reserves and on conservation and education projects around the county.

Women get skin cancer warning
THE deadliest form of skin cancer has now become the most common kind of cancer among women in their 20s, according to figures from Cancer Research UK, which has now launched its 2009 SunSmart campaign.
Almost every day of the year in the UK a woman aged 20 to 29 is diagnosed with malignant melanoma - the potentially-fatal form of skin cancer. In this age range there are twice as many cases of melanoma as there are of breast cancer.
