Energy bills set to fall, says Euro MP

HOUSEHOLDERS paying over the odds for gas and electricity are set to make big savings, thanks to new moves backed by an East Midlands Euro MP.

Glenis Willmott says a new EU law means almost six million UK households will see a cut in their energy bills.

“Households without access to the cheapest tariffs because they don’t pay by direct debit and who use pre-payment meters can be among the poorest, yet latest figures show they may pay hundreds of pounds more for their gas and electricity," she said.

“But now the European Parliament has fought back on energy poverty and millions of UK consumers will see the benefit.”

The European Parliament is leading moves for a ban on all discriminatory pricing in the energy market - including pre-payment meters. Mrs Willmott says this means more than 5.9 million UK households who use them will save up to £215 a year on heating and power for their homes.

The new European legislation will also ensure every household in the EU must be fitted with a so-called Smart Meter by 2022 to help customers control their energy use and increase energy efficiency.
