Views sought on future of town

RESIDENTS in Ashbourne are being asked for their help in developing plans for the town.

A major consultation on issues the area faces and potential options for addressing them is under way, running until May 21.

Prepared by Derbyshire Dales District Council and High Peak Borough Council, the Core Strategy Issues and Options Consultation Document seeks views on housing, jobs, the environment, health, transport, sport and recreation, and climate change.

Councillor Lewis Rose, leader of the district council, said ” We would like people’s views on the key issues that the Core Strategy needs to address and the options that have been identified to do this.

"Once adopted, the Core Strategy will form the basis for the district council’s decisions about how the area develops up to the year 2026 so we want as many people as possible to share their views with us.”

A Core Strategy exhibition is running at Ashbourne Library until May 7.

The full document is available online via a link on the district council website www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk

Deadline for comments is May 21 and they can be submitted online or by emailing Planning@derbyshiredales.gov.uk or by post to Derbyshire Dales District Council,Town Hall, Bank Road, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 3NN (phone 01629 761100).

End 'travelling circus' say Euro MPs

LOCAL Conservative MEPs Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris are calling for an end to the European Parliament's two-seat operation.

Twelve times a year the Parliament decamps from Brussels and relocates 250 miles away in Strasbourg.

Mr Helmer and Mr Heaton-Harris say the 'travelling circus' costs taxpayers £180 million a year.

Mr Helmer said: "Moving the European Parliament from one country to another is completely pointless and a huge waste of taxpayers' money. There is no practical reason why we should go to Strasbourg as we have all the facilities we need in Brussels."

Mr Heaton-Harris added: "It is time for Gordon Brown to raise the issue with his European counterparts and demand they end this profligacy."
